Preparations for the September School fete have been underway all week!
I am running the Eco stall and our Year 1s have been helping to make candle holders and various pots from reusable glass jars =)
The first required some dyed rice to give them a nice filled inside. I tried to accommodate colours for different homes.
Instructions below (simples!)
Simple liquid food colouring will work best, this one is from Asda and is roughly 97p per bottle.
I added a small amount of water but found that the colour was drastically weakened even with a tablespoon of water.
Once the dye is mixed with the rice (roughly 1kg per half bottle of food dye), spread a thin layer of it onto a flat baking tray covered with tin foil.
Place into an oven pre-heated to 180C (any more than this and the rice will burn). Leave in the oven for approx 8 minutes and voila!
Leave to cool and then transfer into an airtight container (rice spillage is not fun after a few days of treading it in everywhere after countless dustpan and brush sessions!).
The finished result looks a little like the one to the left (purple rice).
Pictures to follow of how the jars turned out with the kiddies!
